3 second violation
Anyone know what a 3 second violation is in basketball? It's a penalty when an offensive player remains in the "paint", or lane, without the ball for more than three seconds. In essence you can't just stand in the lane unless you're involved in the action. What's the relevance to tennis? In doubles there is also an area where you shouldn't just stand around unless you're in the action. Think of the first 10-12 feet nearest the net as the "paint". You should only be in the paint if you're actively playing the ball. If you don't have the ball and you remain in the paint, you're vulnerable to the lob, or worse yet, you could get picked off by the opposing volleyer.

So don't get called for a 3 second violation. When you close take care of business by trying to finish the point. And if you don't and the ball comes back to your partner, take a step or two back so you're not in a vulnerable position.

See you on the courts!

To poach or not to poach....
that is the question! The answer is poach often, and when you're not poaching, fake poach. Part of your job as the server's partner is to be a nuisance to the returner. If the returner is worried about where you are and what you're doing, they're less likely to hit a strong return.

Do I have to come to net?
This is one of the most common doubles questions I'm asked. My simple answer? YOU DON'T HAVE TO COME IN ON EVERY POINT, JUST THE ONES YOU WANT TO WIN!
